The R2np
The R2np is a metal implantation system for chronic recordings with Neuropixels 2 probes that feature the dovetail caps. It contains micromachined rails to easily attach and secure the probes, similar to the official holders for acute insertions.
The implant is compatible to our R2Drive ecosystem - it features the same, proven base for stable, long-term chronic implantation and is compatible to the R2Drive holders.
Please note that the current design is only compatible to the original IMEC caps, not the slightly larger Sensapex version.

Mounting the probe - The short video on the left shows a naive user's first ever attempt at dismounting a Neuropixels 2.0 probe from the R2np implantation system. Quick and easy! The first ever mounting (not filmed) took a little longer, but still under 30 seconds. At no point was the probe at risk. And both operations were simple enough to get done with only one hand, leaving the other hand for holding the whole package. In mostwithout fixing the holder to any attachment to have two free hands.
Implanting the probe - Implantation is standard, with several protocols available (e.g. Vöröslakos et al. 2021, Kinsky et al. 2023). So is explantation, powered by the removable base which can be left onto the animal's skull as the R2np's body and mounted probe are recovered in the stereotax (or manually for the steady hands out there).
